  • Art Therapy Workshop

    Published 24/11/21

Here at Vanguard, we recently had an Art Therapy workshop, conducted by M.A.A.P Learning. The focus was on Stephen Wiltshire (OBE), who is an Autistic Artist from London, most famous for his photographic memory and his ability to paint landscaped areas. Students learned about his determination to succeed in his craft, without letting ANYTHING stop him.

The session began with students writing down what they wanted to be when they grew up. It then progressed into the Art therapy where students were encouraged to paint anything they felt or they identified with!

From Agriculturalists to Artists to Youtubers! Here at Vanguard, we aim to bring forth everyone’s artistic side and encourage a healthy way of self-expression through art.

  • Photography Careers Talk

    Published 20/07/21

On 7th June, our Year 9 class had an exciting guest speaker - the freelance photographer Alma Rosaz who has worked with brands such as Adidas, Daily Paper Kids, and Jaded London, and worked internationally in Paris, London and New York.

Alma Rosaz displayed a portfolio of her work for students to see, explaining her career journey from school to being a professional photographer. She discussed the realities of being a photographer, the necessary skills needed to succeed, and the importance of networking. She also provided the students with a photographer job-like task by asking them to take two photos of items which represented them. You can see some photos our students took in this blog post.

The students were very engaged and took the opportunity to ask Alma Rosaz questions during the Q&A and find out more about her collaborations, projects and experiences. To wrap up the photographer task experience, Alma provided encouraging verbal and written feedback to the students after the session.

We are thankful to the students who enthusiastically took part and very grateful to Alma Rosaz for sharing her experiences and insight through her ‘lens’!

  • Careers in Construction Talk with Mace

    Published 24/06/21

On 24th June, our students had an interactive and insightful experience when representatives from the successful construction company Mace visited Vanguard.

Guest speakers Sean Cryan and Stuart Wallis talked about their roles, the different projects that Mace was involved in, and different jobs available in the construction industry.
Sean is a Bidding Manager at Mace (securing bids on a project site) and Stuart is an Employee Relations Manager (managing employment relations on site and ensuring people are employed fairly and safely in their jobs).

    Our students also learned:

    • how technology has advanced to be able to support the development process of a construction project.
    • the different salaries based on different seniority levels and types of jobs in a construction company (apprentice, manager, director).
    • career options and skills required depending on the job type.

Our students, who had also previously expressed interest in the construction industry, asked lots of questions and dug deeper into careers in the construction industry and the pathways they could take.

We are grateful to our students who took part in this session and strived to learn a lot, as well as to Sean, Stuart and Mace for taking the time to visit Vanguard and share such valuable insight with us! Also, a special thank you to Olivia Wybraniec, a member of our Governing Body, for building this partnership for us.

  • Careers Adviser Group Sessions

    Published 10/06/21

On 27th May and 10th June, our Year 7 and Year 8 students had insightful group sessions with our external careers adviser Mr Young.

This group session was an opportunity to explain the role of the careers adviser, to reflect on where the students were today and to think about where they might be in the future.
They also considered the skills that are required in different careers and the skills which they may need to acquire in the future. The session also aimed to encourage classes to consider non-financial and other lifestyle factors when making educational and career plans.

As our students progress through their educational journey at Vanguard, they will build more complex career-related knowledge and skills over the coming years.  Well done to all students for being active learners and contributing to class discussions!
If you have any queries about your child’s career education or would like further careers-related information and support, please get in touch with Miss Rahman (Careers Education Lead)

  • Year 9 Mythbusters Session

    Published 24/05/21

On 24th May, we had representatives from Middlesex University virtually meet our Year 9 class to deliver a “higher education mythbusters” session.

The interactive workshop was designed to provide students with an understanding of myths about higher education and shed light on misconceptions.

Throughout this workshop, students got the chance to ‘bust’ myths about who higher education is for and they learned through a student ambassador’s experiences.

Our students also had the chance to explore Middlesex University virtually and you have the chance to do this too using this link: https://embed.mdx.ac.uk/vt2018/?/select

We wanted to provide our students with more insight and options for their future so they can make the best decisions for themselves early on in their journey.
